A pedestrian was killed Friday night when he was struck by a water truck on Volcano Highway (Route 11) near the 20-mile marker in Glenwood.
Police have not identified the man or the truck’s driver, a 49-year-old Hilo man.
Officers responding to a 7:29 p.m. call determined that the pedestrian was in the northbound lane of the roadway when he was struck by the 1998 Peterbilt water truck.
The pedestrian was taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:57 p.m.
Neither the truck driver nor his 48-year-old wife were injured.
Officers were already en route to the scene after receiving a report of a man running on the roadway.
The fatal collision caused the closure of the highway for almost four hours.
Police do not suspect the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs or that he was speeding when the collision occurred.
A negligent homicide investigation has been opened and an autopsy ordered.
The death is the 13th official traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to 14 at the same time last year.
